Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Edmond Kombat, has announced a 30 percent salary increase for the facility's workforce, bringing an end to a decade-long wage freeze. This significant adjustment marks a turning point for the employees of the state-owned refinery, who have navigated ten years without a pay adjustment. The announcement is seen as a crucial step in addressing the economic pressures faced by the staff while signaling a new chapter in the operational management of the refinery.
The salary increment was secured following a series of successful negotiations between the refinery’s management and the various workers’ unions represented at the facility. These discussions focused on the dual goals of improving the general working conditions of the staff and ensuring the long-term viability of the refinery. Mr. Kombat indicated that the dialogue was collaborative, aimed at fostering a positive relationship between the leadership and the workforce to maintain industrial harmony and institutional stability.
A key driver behind the management's decision to grant this increase is the refinery's recent return to profitability. After years of operational hurdles and financial constraints, the refinery’s improved fiscal performance has provided the necessary headroom to review and enhance employee compensation. By aligning worker benefits with the institution's financial recovery, management aims to incentivize higher productivity and retain the skilled personnel vital to the refinery's continued success in Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector.
