The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, has announced that it will host its 2026 International Conference from September 21 to 25 in Dakar, Senegal. This high-level gathering is expected to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including senior judicial and government officials, legal practitioners, academics, and civil society representatives from across the West African sub-region. Under the theme "ECOWAS Court of Justice at the Crossroads: Justice, Innovation, Human Rights Protection and the Future of Regional Integration in West Africa," the event will serve as a critical platform for evaluating the court's progress and its evolving role in the community.
The conference is structured around seven thematic sessions designed to address both contemporary challenges and emerging legal frontiers. Key topics of discussion will include human rights jurisprudence, the enforcement of court judgments, and environmental justice. In a move to align regional justice with global trends, the agenda also features sessions on digital innovation, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in law, and data protection. Furthermore, participants will explore specialized areas such as refugee protection and the proposed establishment of an appellate chamber, which aims to enhance the judicial infrastructure of the ECOWAS legal system.
The primary objective of the five-day summit is to foster dialogue and partnerships that improve the accessibility and effectiveness of justice within West Africa. A key deliverable will be the production of an Outcome Document, a strategic roadmap outlining priority actions to strengthen regional justice delivery and human rights protection. By addressing the intersection of law and technology while reinforcing its commitment to human rights, the ECOWAS Court of Justice seeks to solidify its position as a vital pillar for regional integration and a guarantor of the rule of law for all citizens in the Member States.
