The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide meter audit exercise designed to reduce commercial losses and enhance revenue assurance. The initiative, which spans all of the company’s operational areas, focuses on identifying and curbing electricity theft to ensure the long-term sustainability of power distribution. By verifying the integrity of its metering infrastructure, the company aims to ensure that every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed is accurately recorded and billed.
The audit involves a detailed inspection and verification of all categories of metering systems. This includes prepaid and postpaid meters, alongside Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations used by larger consumers. ECG technical teams will assess these systems for any signs of tampering, illegal bypasses, or technical faults that may lead to inaccurate measurement. The company maintains that ensuring meter integrity is a critical step in stabilizing the utility's financial health and improving service delivery to legitimate customers.
To safeguard the public against potential impostors, ECG has introduced mandatory verification protocols for all field personnel. Customers are encouraged to authenticate the identity of any person claiming to be an ECG official by using a designated USSD code or by contacting the company’s Customer Call Centre. The utility provider emphasized that authorized staff must possess and display official identification throughout the audit process to maintain transparency and security during home and business visits.
This nationwide operation is conducted in accordance with regulations provided by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). ECG has noted that this general announcement serves as the official notice for the exercise; therefore, no individual prior notices will be sent to customers before field teams arrive at their premises. The company has appealed for full public cooperation to ensure the audit is completed efficiently, noting that the exercise is vital for the overall stability of the national energy grid.
