The East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation officially commissioned a new learning farm at the University of Ghana in Accra on 20 October 2025. This facility is designed to serve as a practical hub for students and local farmers, focusing on both the technical and business aspects of vegetable production. By providing a dedicated space for hands-on learning, the foundation aims to supplement academic coursework with real-world agricultural practices, ensuring that graduates and practitioners are better prepared for the demands of the industry.
Country Director Jemima Djah highlighted the importance of this initiative during the launch event, noting that the farm will significantly enhance the hands-on experience available to students. She emphasized that while theoretical education is foundational, the ability to apply those concepts in a field setting is critical for success in modern agriculture. The training modules offered at the site will cover various stages of the agricultural value chain, from seed selection and crop management to the business strategies required to make vegetable farming a sustainable and profitable enterprise.
The project receives key support from the Netherlands Embassy, reflecting a continued partnership aimed at boosting Ghana's agricultural sector. This new facility at the University of Ghana builds upon the foundation’s established record in the country; since 2023, the East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation has successfully trained over 30,000 farmers. By focusing on high-quality vegetable production, the initiative seeks to improve food security and provide local farmers with the skills necessary to increase their yields and income.
Beyond technical training, a primary objective of the learning farm is to change the perception of agriculture among the youth. By demonstrating that farming can be a viable and profitable business venture, the foundation and its partners hope to attract more young people into the sector. As the facility begins operations, it is expected to become a cornerstone for agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship at the university, fostering a new generation of skilled agricultural professionals in Ghana.
