A devastating fire that raged for approximately 12 hours has left a trail of destruction in Accra’s North Industrial Area, ravaging two warehouses and numerous wooden structures. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), working alongside internal emergency teams, successfully extinguished the blaze, which significantly disrupted operations for several businesses and local artisans. While no fatalities were reported among employees or residents, several firefighters sustained minor injuries during the prolonged operation to contain the inferno.
Duraplast Limited, one of the primary companies affected, reported the total loss of its stock of finished products housed within the impacted warehouses. Bismack Tsatsu, the Systems Manager at Duraplast, noted that while the financial toll from the destroyed stock is substantial, the company’s main factory and critical manufacturing equipment remained unharmed. This preservation was attributed to the rapid response of the GNFS and the company’s internal safety protocols. Despite the setback, Duraplast management expressed optimism about a swift recovery, indicating that they intend to restore operations as early as Monday.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated in a nearby slum settlement, allegedly triggered by a cooking gas cylinder explosion. The flames quickly spread to the industrial zone, highlighting long-standing concerns regarding the proximity of informal settlements to high-risk industrial sites. Beyond the major corporate losses, many local artisans and transport operators saw their livelihoods severely impacted as their workspaces and equipment were reduced to debris.
In the aftermath of the disaster, affected business owners and workers are appealing for urgent government intervention to assist with recovery efforts. There is also a growing chorus of calls for authorities to implement stricter safety measures and address the risks posed by slums adjacent to industrial zones. As traders and companies begin the arduous task of clearing the rubble, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved urban planning and fire safety enforcement in the capital’s commercial hubs.
