The initial public offering (IPO) for Nigeria's Dangote Petroleum Refinery has concluded with significant investor interest, drawing approximately $4.78 billion (6.4 trillion naira) in orders. This total represents nearly three times the initial $1.6 billion target set for the share sale. Dubbed "The People’s IPO," the offering successfully attracted over 2 million investors from 120 different countries, marking a major milestone for Africa’s largest refinery project.
To ensure broad participation across the continent, the IPO period was extended by two weeks, specifically to encourage more African involvement. Shares were offered at an entry price of $4 each, a strategy designed to democratize access to the energy giant's equity. While the base offering was $1.6 billion, the heavy demand has triggered the potential fulfillment of a greenshoe option, which could increase the final offering size to $2.1 billion.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which began operations in early 2024, currently processes approximately 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The facility is a cornerstone of Nigeria's efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce its long-standing reliance on imported refined petroleum products. Management has outlined ambitious growth plans, aiming to expand processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029.
The overwhelming response to the IPO reflects robust investor confidence in Nigeria's industrial sector and the strategic importance of the refinery to the regional economy. As the project transitions into its next phase of expansion, the successful capital raise provides a firm financial foundation for future operations. The diverse investor base, spanning 120 nations, underscores the international significance of this multi-billion dollar investment in West African infrastructure.
