Cyber Security Authority Warns of Surging Food Delivery Scams on Google Maps
•2 min read•1 source
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a critical alert to the Ghanaian public regarding a sophisticated and rapidly growing impersonation scam targeting the food delivery sector. Fraudsters are increasingly manipulating popular digital tools such as Google Search and Google Maps to create fraudulent business listings that mimic legitimate restaurants and food vendors. According to the CSA, this trend has led to a significant surge in both the frequency of reports and the total financial losses incurred by unsuspecting victims during the first half of this year. Statistical data released by the Authority reveals a worrying trajectory. Between January and June, the number of reported cases involving food vendor impersonation nearly doubled, climbing from 61 to 112 incidents. Even more concerning is the escalation in financial damages; losses reported by victims soared from GH¢84,592 to a staggering GH¢296,083.68 within the same six-month period. The scam typically involves criminals listing fake contact information or payment links on Google Maps. When customers attempt to order food, they are directed to make upfront payments, after which the "vendors" disappear and the food is never delivered. In response to this growing threat, the CSA is urging consumers to exercise extreme caution when interacting with food vendors online. The Authority advises the public to verify business details through official social media pages or recognized delivery apps before making any financial commitments. Users are further cautioned against clicking on unfamiliar payment links or sharing sensitive personal information with unverified contacts. For business owners, the CSA emphasizes the necessity of claiming and securing their Google Business Profiles and regularly monitoring their online presence for unauthorized changes or inaccuracies that could mislead their customers. This alert underscores the broader challenges of cybersecurity in Ghana's expanding digital economy. As more Ghanaians transition to online services for daily needs, the tactics of cybercriminals are becoming more localized and specific. The CSA’s proactive stance serves as a reminder that while digital platforms offer convenience, they also require a high level of digital literacy and vigilance. By staying informed and following recommended security protocols, both consumers and legitimate businesses can better protect themselves from the financial and reputational damage caused by online fraud.
