Leaders of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) have paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Gamal Nkrumah in Accra following his passing in Cairo, Egypt. Gamal, the son of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, died on October 14, 2026, at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness. The visit served as a formal gesture of solidarity from the party his father founded, marking the loss of a man described by the party as a dedicated custodian of the Nkrumaist legacy.
The CPP delegation was led by Chris Ziga, the Vice-Chairman of the party’s Council of Elders. During the meeting with the bereaved family, the party expressed its deep sorrow and pledged its full support during the mourning period. The CPP issued an official statement honoring the late Gamal Nkrumah as a distinguished journalist and a significant intellectual figure who spent much of his career in Egypt preserving and promoting his father’s political philosophy and Pan-Africanist vision.
In response to the delegation, the family reflected on Gamal’s life and his brief return to Ghana, noting his extensive professional contributions to international journalism. They expressed their appreciation for the support received from the party and the public. The family also specifically acknowledged the assistance provided by the governments of both Ghana and Egypt during Gamal's illness and his final days in Cairo, which facilitated his care abroad.
As the family and the nation mourn, the CPP has signaled its intention to remain closely involved in the funeral arrangements. The death of Gamal Nkrumah marks the passing of a significant link to the founding era of Ghana’s independence. The family is expected to announce further details regarding the repatriation of his remains and the schedule for memorial services in both Cairo and Accra in the coming days.
