A delegation from the Convention People's Party (CPP) visited the family of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to express condolences following the death of his eldest son, Gamel Nkrumah. Led by Comrade Chris Ziga, the party elders sought to offer moral and organizational support to the bereaved family. The visit served as a formal gesture of solidarity from the party Dr. Nkrumah founded, with the delegation pledging its full involvement in the upcoming funeral rites to be held in Ghana.
During the meeting, Gamel’s siblings, Samia and Sekou Nkrumah, reflected on the profound challenges their brother faced throughout his life, rooted in the political instability of the 1960s. They shared how the 1966 military coup that overthrew their father drastically altered Gamel’s life trajectory. Forced into exile at a young age, Gamel spent significant years in Egypt. The siblings revealed that the trauma of the coup and the subsequent displacement led to persistent health issues that disrupted Gamel's education and shaped his later struggles to adapt after the family's return to Ghana in 1975.
The family expressed gratitude for the diplomatic and humanitarian support provided by the governments of both Ghana and Egypt during Gamel’s hospitalization and the arrangements following his death. While Gamel had spent much of his professional life as a journalist in Egypt, his siblings noted the significance of the support from the Ghanaian state in honoring his memory. The CPP delegation reaffirmed its historical bond with the family, promising to work closely with them to ensure a befitting farewell.
As the family prepares for the final funeral ceremonies, the passing of Gamel Nkrumah has drawn attention to the enduring personal toll that Ghana’s early political upheavals took on the first family. The CPP’s commitment to supporting the funeral arrangements underscores the party's continued reverence for the Nkrumah lineage. Further details regarding the specific dates and locations for the state-assisted funeral services are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
