The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has officially reinstated its free fertilizer and agro-input distribution program for the 2026 farming season. This initiative marks a significant policy shift, transitioning from a 50% subsidy model back to a full free distribution system to enhance productivity across the cocoa sector. The board has procured 3.5 million bags of granular fertilizer for the program, with approximately 1.2 million bags already delivered to distribution centers across the country to ensure timely access for farmers.
Beyond granular fertilizer, the package includes 1.8 million liters of liquid fertilizers, 2.3 million liters of insecticides, and 1.5 million kilograms of fungicides. To support the logistics of applying these inputs, COCOBOD has supplied 5.7 million liters of premix fuel and 89,000 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE). COCOBOD Board Chairman Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo noted that the board has also increased field allowances and labor fees to address long-standing staff concerns and ensure the smooth execution of the program.
A central feature of this relaunch is the integration of the digital Cocoa Management System (CMS) to curb the smuggling and diversion of inputs. COCOBOD CEO Dr. Randy Abbey emphasized that only registered and verified farmers will receive supplies, with the digital platform providing real-time tracking of distribution. Dr. Abbey warned that the new system is designed to eliminate favoritism and ensure that the inputs reach the intended beneficiaries without financial or political barriers.
The initiative has received praise from traditional leaders, including Nana Ofori Ahenkan, Acting President of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, who highlighted its potential to improve the livelihoods of farming households. By removing the financial burden of essential inputs, COCOBOD aims to address declining productivity and pest challenges. The board views the program as a strategic investment into the future of Ghana's cocoa industry, focusing on sustainable yields and farmer income growth.
