Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak has issued a stern warning to education directors across the country, stating they will be held personally accountable for any attempts to shield staff members accused of sexual misconduct. Speaking at the 33rd Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) held in Kumasi, Dr. Apaak emphasized that the safety and well-being of students must remain the absolute priority of all school administrators. He underscored that any failure to report allegations promptly would result in administrative sanctions against the responsible officials.
The Deputy Minister’s remarks come in the wake of recent allegations of sexual abuse involving a headteacher at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School. Dr. Apaak stressed that administrators must not allow the reputation or professional position of an accused individual to interfere with the legal and administrative reporting processes. He noted that safeguarding children from harm should always take precedence over protecting the careers of adults, regardless of their standing within the educational system.
Dr. Apaak urged the directors to adhere strictly to established reporting procedures, ensuring that every case of suspected abuse is investigated thoroughly and handled with the urgency it deserves. He cautioned that protecting teachers or other staff members at the expense of students' safety is a dereliction of duty that will no longer be tolerated under the current administration. He reminded the gathered officials that their primary mandate is to foster an environment where learners feel secure and supported.
The conference, which brings together education leaders from across Ghana, serves as a critical platform for discussing policy implementation and systemic challenges. By addressing the issue of sexual abuse directly, the Ministry of Education aims to reinforce a culture of transparency and accountability within the nation's schools. Dr. Apaak concluded by assuring the public that the government remains committed to taking decisive action against those who violate the trust of students and their families.
