US singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray following a violent incident at a London nightclub. The sentencing follows an attack on music producer Abraham ‘Abe’ Diaw on February 19, 2023. Brown, who admitted to the charge, will avoid immediate imprisonment unless he commits another offence during the one-year suspension period.
The court heard that the altercation occurred at Tape, a private members' club in Mayfair, where Brown struck Diaw multiple times with a glass tequila bottle. CCTV footage presented during the proceedings showed the singer striking the victim four times, an act that left Diaw requiring hospital treatment. Judge Tony Baumgartner described the violence as "serious," noting that such actions in a crowded environment posed significant risks to other patrons and that celebrity status does not exempt individuals from the law.
Brown was sentenced alongside his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray for his role in the assault. Akinlolu was handed a four-month prison sentence, which was similarly suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered by the court to pay £1,500 in legal costs. The defense argued in mitigation that the incident was brief and regrettable, portraying Brown as a law-abiding citizen since 2013 and a devoted father.
Judge Baumgartner cited Brown's guilty plea and the potential negative impact of a custodial sentence on his children as primary reasons for suspending the jail term. Following the hearing, Brown was seen celebrating outside the court and receiving cheers from fans as he departed. The charge of affray involves the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes a person to fear for their personal safety.
