The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy hospital ship, Auspicious Ark (Hull 868), has docked at the Tema port to begin a seven-day humanitarian medical mission in Ghana. Arriving on October 23, 2026, the vessel’s visit is part of "Mission Harmony 2026," marking its first-ever trip to the country. The mission aims to provide a wide range of free medical services, including consultations and surgeries, to the Ghanaian public while strengthening bilateral ties and military cooperation between the two nations.
The Auspicious Ark is a sophisticated floating medical facility equipped with advanced technology, capable of hosting more than 100 beds and performing up to 30 surgeries daily. During its week-long stay, the ship’s medical teams will offer essential healthcare services to underserved communities and the general public. Beyond the ship-based operations, outreach teams are expected to engage with local healthcare providers to share knowledge and provide clinical support, ensuring the mission’s impact extends into the local health sector.
The arrival of the vessel was marked by a welcoming ceremony attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana and senior Ghanaian military officials. Commodore Raymond Kyaano welcomed the crew, emphasizing that the visit presents a unique opportunity for humanitarian assistance and deepens the medical cooperation between the Ghana Armed Forces and the PLA Navy. Rear Admiral Guan Bailin, the Mission Commander, expressed confidence that the mission would enhance professional relationships and foster mutual understanding through specialized medical exchanges.
This visit underscores the long-standing diplomatic and military friendship between Ghana and China. The Auspicious Ark is scheduled to conclude its activities in Tema on October 30, 2026, before departing for Togo to continue its regional medical tour. The mission is viewed as a significant step in improving access to healthcare for thousands of residents while reinforcing international maritime and medical partnerships.
