The Cancer Care Africa Foundation (CanCAF) has officially launched a global Leadership Development Series for Nurses and Midwives (LIT), designed to enhance professional leadership and patient care outcomes across the continent. The three-day initiative, themed "Lead. Influence. Transform," aims to equip nursing and midwifery professionals with the essential skills needed to address complex healthcare challenges and effectively influence national and regional policy decisions. By focusing on policy influence, the program seeks to ensure that these frontline workers have a seat at the table where healthcare delivery strategies are formulated.
The launch event brought together a diverse group of healthcare leaders, educators, and policymakers to deliberate on the critical role of effective leadership in modern healthcare systems. A significant highlight of the program was a keynote address by Professor James Avoka Asamani from the World Health Organization (WHO), who underscored the urgent need for investment in nursing leadership. Professor Asamani noted that empowered nurses and midwives are central to the resilience and efficiency of any healthcare system, particularly in regions facing significant resource constraints.
Inspired by the vision of Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, the LIT Series operates on the philosophy that leadership can and should emerge from any position within the healthcare hierarchy, rather than being restricted to formal administrative roles. The curriculum focuses on fostering proactive participation among staff to shape daily healthcare delivery and patient management. By encouraging nurses and midwives to see themselves as transformative agents, CanCAF aims to elevate the status and impact of these professions within the broader medical landscape.
This initiative marks a long-term commitment by CanCAF to build a sustainable community of leaders within the nursing profession across Africa. Organizers believe that by strengthening the leadership capacity of these practitioners, African nations can significantly improve their healthcare systems' overall performance. The foundation plans to maintain the series as a platform for ongoing mentorship, professional growth, and cross-border collaboration among healthcare practitioners to ensure a lasting legacy of improved patient outcomes.
