The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously voted to return the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to its traditional biennial schedule. The decision, announced by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe during a strategy conference in Cabo Verde held from October 7 to 9, 2026, reverses a previous move to hold the continent's flagship football tournament every four years. The shift back to a two-year format is intended to safeguard the interests of African football and its 54 member associations by ensuring more frequent competitive opportunities and developmental growth.
Speaking at the conference, Dr. Motsepe emphasized that the executive committee's resolution was aimed at maximizing the visibility and impact of the sport across the continent. This reversal comes after the governing body had explored a quadrennial cycle to align with other global tournaments. While the next edition of the tournament is already scheduled to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2027, the move back to a two-year cycle confirms that the tournament will remain a frequent fixture on the international sporting calendar.
The decision to maintain a frequent schedule is expected to provide a significant boost to broadcasting revenues and provide national teams with more consistent international exposure. Proponents of the biennial format argue that regular tournaments are essential for funding local football infrastructure and providing African players with a vital platform to showcase their talents to a global audience. However, the announcement has also brought back discussions regarding potential player fatigue and the logistical challenges of coordination with major leagues worldwide.
Despite the potential for scheduling conflicts with European clubs where many African stars compete, CAF leadership maintains that the cultural and developmental significance of the AFCON outweighs these hurdles. Dr. Motsepe highlighted the tournament's role as a cornerstone of African identity and a primary engine for footballing excellence. Moving forward, CAF intends to continue its engagement with various stakeholders to ensure the tournament schedule is managed effectively within the broader global football calendar.
