The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested 36-year-old Gyamfi Christian in connection with a sophisticated fake gold scam that defrauded a gold aggregator of GH¢1.1 million. The arrest, which occurred on August 17, 2026, followed a complaint lodged by the victim, Christopher Awuni, who discovered that the 110 troy ounces of gold he purchased were counterfeit. Christian was apprehended at a hideout in Wamfie after an intelligence-led investigation by regional authorities.
According to police reports, the fraudulent transaction took place in Berekum in July 2026, where Christian and three other men allegedly posed as legitimate gold sellers. After the victim realized the gold was fake through subsequent testing, he alerted the police. Upon his arrest, Christian reportedly admitted his involvement and provided the names of his three accomplices, who are currently at large. The police are intensifying their efforts to locate these individuals to bring the entire syndicate to justice.
Further investigations have revealed that this group may be part of a larger criminal network operating within the Bono Region. Authorities have uncovered links between the suspect and another major fraud case earlier this year, where another victim was allegedly swindled of GH¢1.4 million in a similar scheme. This pattern suggests a coordinated effort by the syndicate to target high-value buyers in Ghana’s gold industry, utilizing the allure of precious metals to execute significant financial crimes.
In light of these events, the Bono Regional Police Command has issued a strong warning to gold dealers, aggregators, and the general public to exercise maximum vigilance. Authorities are urging all parties involved in gold transactions to verify the authenticity of products through official regulatory bodies and to conduct thorough due diligence on all sellers. As the investigation remains ongoing, the police have called for public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to help dismantle such fraudulent networks and protect the integrity of the local gold market.
