In observance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Upper East Regional Hospital has conducted a targeted sensitization program for students at the Nursing Training College in Bolgatanga. The initiative, operating under the "Gold Ribbon Upper East" campaign, is designed to equip future healthcare professionals with the critical skills needed to identify early warning signs of childhood cancer and promote proactive health-seeking behavior within their local communities.
Mr. Jonah Awinbe Ayamba, the Assistant Manager of the Paediatric Oncology Unit, led the training session, emphasizing the strategic role student nurses play as trusted health advisors. During the presentation, Ayamba detailed specific symptoms that warrant immediate medical evaluation, stressing that early detection is the most effective tool for improving survival rates among children. He also took the opportunity to dispel common societal myths, clarifying that childhood cancer is not contagious and urging students to use their positions to provide accurate information to concerned families.
The college's Academic Officer acknowledged the importance of the session, noting that involving student nurses in such specialized health awareness programs significantly enhances their educational experience and community impact. By integrating the "Gold Ribbon" initiative into nursing education, the Upper East Regional Hospital aims to create a robust network of community-level advocates capable of facilitating earlier diagnoses and ensuring that children receive necessary clinical interventions before the disease advances.
