The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has appeared before Parliament's Local Government Committee to address the interdiction of Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). The headmaster is currently the subject of an investigation following serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving 19 female students at his private residence. The Mayor’s testimony aimed to clarify his role and relationship with the headmaster amid public scrutiny of the case.
During the committee hearing, Agyemang Boadi revealed that he had personally cautioned Abdulai in the past regarding his interactions with students. The Mayor stated that he had advised the headmaster against allowing female students to visit his residence to prevent any perceptions of misconduct. This prior warning, according to the Mayor, demonstrates that he was aware of potential risks but did not condone the behavior that led to the current investigation and subsequent interdiction.
Responding to suggestions that he may have been protecting the headmaster, Agyemang Boadi categorically denied any attempts to shield Abdulai from accountability. He emphasized that, as the Mayor of Kumasi, he possesses no direct supervisory or administrative authority over officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES), such as a school headmaster. He maintained that his interaction with Abdulai was limited and that the administrative process must remain independent of local governance interference.
Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka further informed the committee that Abdulai has been arrested in connection with the ongoing police investigation. Law enforcement officials are currently gathering evidence and statements from the 19 students involved to determine the full extent of the alleged misconduct. The outcome of this police inquiry will dictate the next steps in the legal and disciplinary proceedings against the headmaster.
