Ghana’s women’s national team, the Black Queens, took a significant step toward qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games with a dominant 3-0 victory over Mauritius. Playing at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, the Ghanaian side secured a comfortable first-leg advantage in the second round of the qualifiers. This victory marks a strong start for Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s team as they seek their first-ever Olympic appearance after receiving a bye in the opening round of the tournament.
The Black Queens established their authority early in the match, breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute through Abigail Kim. Ghana maintained control of the game throughout the first half, with Alice Kusi and Benedicte Simon also finding the back of the net to seal the 3-0 scoreline before the break. Despite continuing to apply pressure and creating several opportunities in the second half, the Queens were unable to add further goals, but their defensive discipline ensured they kept a clean sheet away from home.
Coach Bjorkegren named a 24-player squad for this encounter, including several players who were instrumental in the team's recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign. The tactical superiority of the Black Queens was evident as they dominated possession and effectively neutralised the host nation's offensive threats. Mauritius, coming off a successful earlier qualification round, found it difficult to match the intensity and organization of the Ghanaian side.
The two teams will meet again for the second leg of the qualifier, which is scheduled to take place on October 13 at the Accra Sports Stadium. With a three-goal cushion and three away goals to their credit, Ghana is in a commanding position to advance to the next stage of the qualification process. The team will look to finalise their progress in front of a home crowd as they continue their journey toward the historic goal of competing in the 2028 Olympic Games.
