Black Maidens beat Argentina to reach U-17 World Cup quarter-finals

Ghana’s national U-17 women’s football team, the Black Maidens, has advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Argentina. The match, which ended 1-1 after regulation time, saw the Ghanaian side overcome significant obstacles, including playing with ten players for a portion of the game. This victory ensures Ghana’s progression to the quarter-final stage for the fifth consecutive edition of the global tournament.

The Black Maidens took an early lead in the 16th minute through Jessica Appiah, who found the net to give Ghana a deserved advantage. However, the game took a challenging turn when Hajara Adams was shown a red card, leaving the team shorthanded. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ghana held their lead until the closing stages of the match. In the 87th minute, Argentina’s Mercedes Diz scored a late equalizer to level the score and force the tie into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, the Maidens displayed exceptional composure, converting all five of their spot-kicks to secure the 5-4 win. Jessica Appiah, who had opened the scoring during regular time, stepped up to convert the decisive winning penalty. Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award for the second time in the tournament. Head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa later described Appiah’s talent as "world-class," noting her resilience and leadership during the high-stakes encounter.

Coach Adarkwa attributed the team’s mental strength to a recovery process involving technical praise and incentives, which helped the players regain their confidence after a difficult 3-0 opening loss to Norway earlier in the competition. Following that defeat, the team rebounded with a 3-3 draw against Brazil and a 2-0 victory over Canada to reach the knockout stage. Ghana now prepares for the quarter-final round, where they will face the winner of the match between Japan and Kenya, with Adarkwa expressing confidence that his squad can handle their next opponents.
