The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. General Birame Diop, has formally accepted Letters of Credence from the representatives of four nations and one international organization during a ceremony in Abuja. Held on October 7, 2025, the diplomatic event included the presentation of credentials from the envoys of Japan, Germany, Italy, and Thailand, as well as the representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This ceremony marks a significant step in deepening the regional bloc’s engagement with global partners and reinforcing its diplomatic network.
During the proceedings, General Diop emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and diplomatic cooperation to address the various developmental and security challenges facing the West African sub-region. The accreditation of these representatives underscores the continued interest of international stakeholders in supporting the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its mission to promote economic integration and regional stability. By welcoming a diverse group of partners ranging from major European and Asian economies to specialized international agencies, the Commission aims to leverage global expertise for regional benefit.
The formalization of these ties reflects the broad international commitment to West African development and migration management. The inclusion of the IOM representative is particularly notable, highlighting the priority ECOWAS places on addressing human mobility and the protection of displaced persons within its member states. Moving forward, these strengthened diplomatic foundations are expected to pave the way for enhanced technical cooperation, trade agreements, and mutual support on the international stage, further solidifying the role of ECOWAS as a key player in global diplomacy.
