The Accra High Court has scheduled November 4, 2026, to deliver its ruling on a bail application filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman. Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is seeking release from custody pending the outcome of an appeal against his 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences. The court’s decision follows a hearing where his legal team argued for his temporary freedom while his case is reviewed by a higher court. During the proceedings on October 15, the Attorney-General’s department formally opposed the bail application, labeling Boasiako a significant flight risk. The prosecution argued that the severity of the sentence and the nature of the crimes increase the likelihood that the NPP chairman might flee the country if released. The hearing had been delayed since August 19 due to the previous absence of both Boasiako and his legal counsel, but the court has now concluded hearing arguments from both sides. While Boasiako remains in custody, associates have raised concerns regarding his welfare at Nsawam Prison. Paul Kwabena Yandoh, a former NPP communicator, claimed in a public appeal that the regional chairman is being held in a cell with approximately 50 other inmates and has limited access to basic comforts. Yandoh has urged the court to consider Boasiako's non-violent character and grant the bail on humanitarian grounds while the legal process continues. The upcoming ruling on November 4 will determine whether Boasiako remains incarcerated for the duration of his appeal or is granted conditional release. The case has drawn significant attention due to Boasiako's prominent role in the NPP and the government's ongoing efforts to prosecute illegal mining activities across the country. If the application is successful, he will be the highest-profile convict to be granted bail pending appeal in the current crackdown.
