The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has held a consultative engagement with the leadership of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS). The meeting was organized to gather professional perspectives on enhancing the country’s healthcare delivery system and to address specific bottlenecks affecting the medical laboratory sector.
A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the proposed establishment of a regulatory council for medical laboratory scientists. Dr. Bawumia and the association discussed how such a body would standardize professional practice and improve the quality of diagnostic services. Additionally, the consultations highlighted the need for promoting the local production of laboratory reagents. Encouraging domestic manufacturing is intended to reduce the cost of healthcare and minimize the sector’s reliance on expensive foreign imports.
The NPP flagbearer also addressed professional concerns regarding recruitment processes and the integration of laboratory scientists into the broader health infrastructure. He proposed strengthening national disease surveillance by fostering closer collaboration between the state and the private sector. By leveraging the expertise of medical laboratory professionals, Dr. Bawumia suggested that the country could build a more proactive and efficient healthcare system.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that these discussions are fundamental to developing informed policies that reflect the realities of the health sector. He noted that continuous engagement with professional bodies ensures that government initiatives are both practical and sustainable. The GAMLS leadership, in turn, shared insights on sector-specific challenges, providing a roadmap for future reforms aimed at improving health outcomes for all Ghanaians.
