The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced a rescheduling of the official unveiling of its upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, designated as the "Heritage Series." Originally set to take place on November 2, the launch event has been postponed to November 12, 2026. This new series represents a strategic update to the national currency, featuring enhanced security elements and modern designs that celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and national identity while maintaining the existing denominations used by the public.
During a forum held in Accra, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, detailed the motivations behind the new series. He explained that the Heritage Series is designed to significantly improve the durability and resilience of the banknotes, ensuring they withstand the rigors of frequent use. More importantly, the introduction of advanced security features is a proactive measure to stay ahead of counterfeiters and facilitate more effective currency management across the country’s financial system.
Addressing potential public anxiety regarding the transition, Dr. Asiama clarified that the new banknotes will circulate alongside the existing legal tender. He stressed that there is no need for citizens to rush to commercial banks to exchange their current notes, as the old currency remains valid for all transactions. The Bank of Ghana has indicated that it will release further details and specific modalities regarding the rollout and circulation of the Heritage Series prior to the official launch date on November 12.
