The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AWMA) taskforce has carried out a significant decongestion exercise at the Atomic Roundabout, resulting in the dismantling of several unauthorized structures. Among the most notable discoveries during the operation was a makeshift school operating directly under the overpass. The exercise is part of a broader initiative by the assembly to remove illegal settlements and structures that have encroached on public land and thoroughfares within the municipality.
During the demolition, taskforce members encountered a group of children engaged in learning activities within the informal setup. The makeshift school featured tables and chairs arranged as a classroom, with books and other educational materials present, indicating a structured attempt at providing schooling in the hazardous location. Officials moved to clear the space, emphasizing that the area under the bridge is not suitable or safe for such activities, especially given the heavy traffic and environmental risks associated with major road intersections.
The assembly has noted that the proliferation of unauthorized structures at the Atomic Roundabout and surrounding areas poses significant challenges to urban management and public safety. These structures often contribute to poor sanitation and can become hubs for various illegal activities if left unchecked. By dismantling the school and other dwellings, the taskforce aims to restore order to the busy transit point and ensure that municipal regulations regarding land use are strictly followed.
While the operation successfully cleared the underpass, it has sparked discussions regarding the lack of accessible educational facilities for certain communities that might lead to the creation of such makeshift schools. The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has indicated that it will continue to monitor the area to prevent the return of illegal squatters and unauthorized operators. No formal plan has yet been announced regarding the placement of the displaced students into registered government or private schools in the vicinity.
