The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship, Auspicious Ark, has concluded its seven-day humanitarian medical mission in Ghana. The mission, part of China’s Mission Harmony 2026 initiative, provided free healthcare services to 5,909 people at the Tema Port. A farewell ceremony held on October 30, 2026, marked the end of the vessel's stay, which aimed to strengthen health cooperation and bilateral relations between the two nations.
During the week-long mission, the medical staff onboard the Auspicious Ark performed a wide array of procedures and consultations. These included approximately 40 surgical procedures and specialized services such as dental care, eye treatments, cardiac evaluations, orthopedic consultations, and physiotherapy. The ship’s medical personnel worked alongside local counterparts to deliver these essential services, addressing diverse health needs for residents of Tema and surrounding areas.
Beyond direct patient care, the mission prioritized professional development and knowledge sharing between the two countries. Ghanaian medical personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) engaged in professional exchanges with the Chinese team to enhance mutual clinical expertise. Brigadier General Michael Addy, representing the GAF at the departure ceremony, expressed gratitude for the mission's contributions, noting the significant impact on both the patients treated and the local medical staff involved.
The Auspicious Ark's visit underscores the ongoing cooperation between Ghana and China in the health and maritime sectors. The mission is seen as a key component of China’s broader diplomatic outreach through healthcare assistance in West Africa. As the ship departs Tema Port, the successful completion of Mission Harmony 2026 is expected to pave the way for future medical collaborations and joint humanitarian efforts between the two countries' armed forces and health departments.
