Atlantic Lithium Limited has finalized the transfer of rights for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project to Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., marking a pivotal step toward the development of Ghana’s first lithium mine. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources granted formal approval for the transfer of interest from Elevra Lithium Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium, to the Chinese battery materials leader. This transaction secures a robust funding path for the project’s construction and future operations.
Under the terms of the agreement, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt now holds an initial 22.5% interest in the Ewoyaa project. The firm has committed to funding up to $66 million of the remaining development and exploration costs. This strategic financial injection is structured to allow Huayou to eventually increase its total equity stake in the project to 50%. The collaboration is expected to leverage Huayou’s extensive technical expertise in battery material production to optimize the mine's output and operational efficiency.
Keith Muller, the Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Lithium, described the completion of the transfer as a significant milestone for both the company and the project. He emphasized that the partnership strengthens the project’s financial prospects and ensures that development can proceed without delays. Muller also highlighted that the progression of the Ewoyaa mine is expected to deliver substantial benefits to local communities through job creation and infrastructure development, supporting Ghana's broader economic goals.
The Ewoyaa Lithium Project is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to diversify its mining industry beyond traditional commodities like gold and bauxite into green minerals. As global demand for lithium continues to surge due to the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle market, the successful development of the Ewoyaa mine is anticipated to position Ghana as a key contributor to the global battery supply chain. With the necessary regulatory approvals and funding now secured, the project moves significantly closer to the start of commercial production.
