The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced that the 100-bed trauma hospital currently under construction in Anyinam, within the Atiwa East District, is scheduled for commissioning in January 2027. This timeline follows an inquiry from the Member of Parliament for the area, Abena Osei Asare, regarding the status of the facility which has faced significant delays since its inception.
Work on the specialized medical facility originally commenced in October 2020, with an initial completion target set for 2022. However, the project encountered substantial setbacks, primarily linked to payment bottlenecks that emerged following a change in government. These financial constraints halted progress on what was intended to be a critical healthcare hub for the region, leaving the structure incomplete for several years.
Ben Ampomah Nkansah, the Director for Infrastructure at the Ministry of Health, has confirmed that the financial hurdles have been addressed. According to Mr. Nkansah, a recent payment has been processed to the contractors, paving the way for the final phases of construction. He provided assurances that the remaining work is on track to meet the newly established January deadline, ensuring the facility can finally begin serving the public.
MP Abena Osei Asare expressed optimism regarding the latest commitment from the health authorities, noting the importance of the trauma hospital in improving emergency response and medical services in the Eastern Region. Beyond the completion of the new facility, the MP also emphasized the need for further investment and infrastructural improvements at the existing Enyiresi Government Hospital to ensure a comprehensive and robust healthcare network for the Atiwa East constituency.
