The Ashanti Regional Police have successfully dismantled a notorious criminal syndicate responsible for a wave of street robberies across the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area. In a coordinated operation involving the Anti-Armed Robbery Squad and the IGP’s Special Operations Unit, six individuals were apprehended and subsequently remanded by the Asokwa Circuit Court. The suspects, whose ages range from 20 to 45, are linked to several high-profile robbery incidents in localities such as Kaase and Kwadaso Estate. Among those identified are 23-year-old Philip Nyarko and 20-year-old Hadi Samed, while a third suspect, Augustine Agyemang Duah, was arrested for his alleged role in unlocking stolen mobile devices for the group.
During the operation, police recovered a significant cache of stolen property and weapons used in the commission of crimes. The seized items include three Kawasaki motorbikes, 33 mobile phones, a laptop, and several machetes and knives. Investigations revealed a troubling pattern of recidivism; at least two of the suspects had been previously arrested for similar offenses in December 2025 but were out on bail at the time of their latest crimes. This development has highlighted ongoing challenges regarding the monitoring of repeat offenders within the regional justice system.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, emphasized the command's commitment to restoring safety and security within the metropolis. While the six core suspects are currently in custody, police officials have indicated that the investigation remains active as they pursue additional accomplices who are still at large. The Regional Command is urging members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining syndicate members, assuring informants of strict confidentiality as they work to completely uproot the criminal network.
The suspects appeared before the Asokwa Circuit Court on September 1, 2026, where they pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and robbery. The court has remanded them into police custody to allow for further investigations and to prevent potential interference with witnesses. The case is scheduled for review on September 14, 2026, as the prosecution prepares its evidence. This crackdown is viewed as a significant step in the Ashanti Regional Police’s broader strategy to curb the rising incidence of street crime and ensure public safety under the current administration.
