The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reached a significant milestone in its plan to establish a permanent home by securing a waiver on land allocated for its proposed press centre. The announcement was made by the GJA Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, during the Ashanti Media Excellence Awards 2026. The land, which was donated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to host a modern facility in Kumasi that will serve as both an administrative headquarters and a training hub for media practitioners across the region.
According to Chairman Domfeh, the land waiver represents a crucial step in a project aimed at addressing the shifting dynamics of the media industry. The proposed Ashanti Press Centre is envisioned as a space for collaboration, professional development, and continuous training, helping journalists to navigate the challenges of digital transformation and the rise of misinformation. During the event, Domfeh emphasized the need for journalists to maintain high ethical standards and credibility, noting that a dedicated professional hub would provide the resources and environment necessary to uphold these values.
To move the project from the planning stage to completion, the GJA is calling for broad support from the public and private sectors. The Chairman made a direct appeal to corporate entities, development partners, and individuals to contribute financial and material resources toward the construction of the centre. He stressed that the facility is intended to foster a culture of excellence and investigative journalism, enabling media professionals to better report on pertinent issues affecting communities within the Ashanti Region.
The initiative reflects a broader effort by the GJA to strengthen the media's role in society through improved infrastructure and professional capacity building. By establishing a permanent base, the association aims to provide a sustainable environment where journalists can sharpen their skills and adapt to rapid technological advancements. The successful completion of the press centre is expected to enhance the quality of reporting and safeguard the integrity of the profession in the face of modern media challenges.
