The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has distributed nearly GH¢400,000 from the Disability Common Fund to 59 persons with disabilities (PWDs) to promote economic independence and social inclusion. During the disbursement ceremony held on September 14, 2026, the assembly allocated GH¢242,900 in direct financial support and provided specialized equipment valued at GH¢133,405. These resources are intended to help beneficiaries establish or expand income-generating activities, shifting the focus from temporary assistance to sustainable livelihoods and long-term financial stability within the municipality.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Freeman Tsekpo emphasized that the selection process was rigorous, ensuring that the aid reached those in genuine need. He stressed the importance of monitoring the use of these resources to ensure they are used effectively for their intended purposes rather than being diverted. The local Member of Parliament, Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, also addressed the gathering, calling for the timely release of funds to ensure that beneficiaries can plan their businesses effectively. He further urged the PWD community to remain united to maximize the impact of such government interventions and advocate for their collective interests.
Beneficiaries like Israel K. Golomeke, a 60-year-old visually impaired man, highlighted the transformative potential of the support. Golomeke advocated for sustainable work opportunities rather than a cycle of dependency on temporary handouts, noting that the equipment and funds provide a vital pathway toward dignity and self-reliance. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to discourage street begging by equipping PWDs with the tools and capital necessary to participate actively in the local economy, ultimately fostering a more inclusive society where every citizen has the opportunity to contribute and thrive.
