The Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Very Rev. Fr Arturo Sosa, SJ, visited St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School in Accra on October 13, 2026, to challenge Ghanaian students to leverage their education for social change. Addressing the student body, Fr Sosa emphasized that the true purpose of a Jesuit education extends far beyond achieving academic success. He urged the youth to utilize their knowledge as a tool for promoting justice, reconciliation, and national development, fostering a more humane and compassionate society.
During his address, Fr Sosa highlighted the importance of developing responsible leadership and a sense of social responsibility. He noted that education should empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to the progress of their country. The visit was a centerpiece of the Jesuits' 50-year mission in Ghana, a journey that began with the arrival of Fr Patrick J. Ryan, SJ, in 1974. Rev. Fr Emmanuel Kofi Agyapong, the school's Parish Priest, expressed profound pride in hosting the global leader, noting that the visit reinforces the school's deep-rooted commitment to Jesuit traditions.
As part of his itinerary, the Superior General is scheduled to visit the proposed site for Ghana's first Jesuit college. This new institution is designed to integrate high academic standards with ethical leadership training, aiming to produce graduates who are both intellectually capable and morally grounded. By establishing this college, the Society of Jesus intends to expand its educational footprint in the country, ensuring that the values of service and social justice continue to influence future generations of Ghanaian leaders.
