Renowned entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has sparked a significant debate regarding the state's role in honoring musical icons, specifically addressing recent calls for a dedicated museum for the legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba. During his appearance on UTV's flagship entertainment program, United Showbiz, on August 9, 2026, Asamoah-Baidoo expressed strong skepticism about the feasibility and appropriateness of the Ghanaian government undertaking such a project. His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the creative arts sector about how best to preserve the legacies of the nation's most influential figures.
Asamoah-Baidoo argued that while Daddy Lumba's contributions to the Ghanaian music industry are monumental and indisputable, the financial and logistical burden of creating a private museum should not fall on the taxpayer. He emphasized that the duty of establishing a dedicated space for the 'Aben Wo Aha' hitmaker’s life and work should be shouldered by the artist's family and management. By shifting the responsibility to the private sphere, he suggested that the legacy can be managed with the specific intimacy and detail that a family-led initiative provides, rather than becoming a bureaucratic state project.
The pundit further highlighted the potential for an unsustainable precedent, noting that the government cannot realistically build individual museums for every legend across Ghana’s various creative sectors. He cautioned that such a move would create an expectation for the state to intervene for every iconic figure, which is fiscally impossible given other pressing national priorities. Instead, Asamoah-Baidoo suggested that state resources are better utilized on broader cultural infrastructure that benefits the entire industry, such as national archives or general arts centers, rather than honoring individual legacies in a way that sets an unattainable standard.
This debate reflects a broader tension within the Ghanaian entertainment landscape regarding the balance between state support and private enterprise in the preservation of artistic history. While supporters of the museum proposal argue it would boost tourism and preserve essential cultural heritage for future generations, critics like Asamoah-Baidoo maintain that private initiatives are more suitable for personal legacies. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen whether the family of Daddy Lumba or private investors will take up the mantle to celebrate one of the country's most prolific musical careers.
