Antonio Rattin, the legendary Argentine midfielder whose controversial dismissal at the 1966 World Cup fundamentally changed the officiating of global football, has died at the age of 89. His passing was officially confirmed by Boca Juniors, the club where he spent his entire professional career and achieved iconic status. Rattin, affectionately known as "El Rata," is remembered not only as a formidable presence on the pitch but as a symbol of Argentine grit and institutional loyalty.
Rattin's club career was defined by his unwavering commitment to Boca Juniors. Between 1956 and 1970, he made 382 appearances and scored 28 goals for the Buenos Aires giants, leading them to four league titles and a place in the 1963 Copa Libertadores final. Upon his passing, Boca Juniors expressed deep sorrow, describing him as an "idol and symbol" of the institution. His tenure at the club was so significant that he remains one of the most celebrated figures in their history, having briefly transitioned into coaching the team after his retirement from active play.
On the international stage, Rattin earned 34 caps for Argentina between 1959 and 1969, featuring in both the 1962 and 1966 World Cups. However, it was the 1966 quarter-final against host nation England at Wembley that cemented his place in footballing lore. Sent off by German referee Rudolf Kreitlein for "violence of the tongue," Rattin refused to leave the pitch for several minutes, claiming he did not understand the official’s instructions. In a storied act of defiance, he crumpled an England corner flag and sat on the red carpet reserved for Queen Elizabeth II before finally exiting. He later recalled the moment with characteristic bluntness, stating, "I went over to the carpet the Queen used to enter the stadium and sat there for about five minutes. It was a very nice red carpet."
The chaos surrounding Rattin’s dismissal served as a catalyst for FIFA to modernize communication between referees and players. To prevent future misunderstandings caused by language barriers, the governing body introduced the yellow and red card system at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Beyond the pitch, Rattin's influence extended into the halls of government, as he eventually moved into politics following his retirement from the sport. His death marks the end of an era for both Argentine football and the global game, leaving behind a legacy that is literally visible in every card shown by a referee today.
