Antoine Semenyo nominated for 2026 CAF Men’s Player of the Year

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has been shortlisted for the 2026 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, marking a significant milestone for Ghanaian football. The Manchester City forward is among a prestigious 10-man list for the continent's top individual prize following a prolific year for both club and country. Joining him in the nominations is 20-year-old midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who has been recognized in the Young Player of the Year category following a breakout season with FC Nordsjælland.

Semenyo's nomination comes on the back of an exceptional 2026 calendar year where he established himself as a vital component for his club. At Manchester City, the forward contributed to the team's domestic dominance, helping them secure both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. His individual statistics are equally impressive, having recorded 15 goals and eight assists in 42 appearances throughout the year. For the Black Stars, Semenyo was a pivotal figure during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he helped lead the national team to the Round of 32.

Caleb Yirenkyi’s inclusion in the Young Player of the Year shortlist further highlights the rising talent within the Ghanaian ranks. The midfielder's stock rose significantly after he scored a crucial winning goal against Panama during the World Cup, showcasing his potential on the global stage. He faces competition from nine other prospects from nations including Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt. Additionally, the collective success of the senior national team has been recognized, with the Black Stars earning a nomination for the National Team of the Year award.

The winners will be announced during the CAF Awards ceremony scheduled for December 7, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria. Semenyo faces stiff competition for the top prize from African football luminaries such as Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Senegal’s Sadio Mané. If successful, Semenyo would become the first Ghanaian player to win the Men’s Player of the Year award in over three decades, potentially ending a long drought for the four-time African champions.
