Anthony Appiah, a 44-year-old businessman, has been granted bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 following his appearance in court on charges of defrauding a businesswoman of GH₵480,000. Appiah pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretenses when he was arraigned. The legal proceedings began after allegations surfaced that the accused had used a non-existent business contract to solicit significant funds from the complainant.
According to the prosecution, Appiah allegedly informed the victim that he had secured a lucrative distribution contract with the BEL-AQUA Company. He reportedly claimed he needed financial support to fulfill the requirements of the agreement and promised returns on the investment. However, after receiving the GH₵480,000, Appiah failed to fulfill his obligations or return the capital to the businesswoman, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of the deal.
Police investigations into the matter revealed that the BEL-AQUA Company had no record of a distribution contract with Anthony Appiah. When confronted with these findings and the demand for a refund, the accused failed to return the money, prompting the complainant to seek official police intervention. This led to his arrest and subsequent arraignment before the court to answer for the missing funds.
In granting bail, the court required the accused to provide sureties to ensure his continued appearance for trial. The case has since been adjourned, as the prosecution prepares to present further evidence regarding the alleged misrepresentation and the financial transactions involved. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding contract fraud and the importance of due diligence in private business partnerships.
