AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) commemorated World Food Day on October 16, 2025, by hosting its first Agricultural Fair, dubbed "Agrifair," in Obuasi. The event, held in the Ashanti Region, brought together 40 exhibitors to showcase a diverse range of food products and agricultural innovations. This initiative aligns with the mining company's broader strategy to diversify the local economy and ensure long-term food security in its host communities.
During the fair, the company provided essential agricultural inputs and processing equipment to various local farmers and processing groups. Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, explained that the event is a cornerstone of the company’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan. The fair's theme, "Innovating today, nourishing tomorrow: Building sustainable agriculture for food security and economic growth in Obuasi," underscores the firm's commitment to empowering residents through sustainable economic opportunities that exist alongside its mining operations.
Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, emphasized the importance of corporate involvement in the sector, noting that such ventures are vital for boosting local food production and ensuring national food security. While celebrating the private sector's contribution, community leaders at the fair also called for increased government support to further strengthen the agricultural value chain and provide more resources for local farmers.
The Agrifair serves as a platform for future interventions aimed at transforming Obuasi into a regional agricultural hub. By providing both a marketplace for exhibitors and technical support for producers, AngloGold Ashanti intends to foster a resilient local economy that can thrive independently of the mining industry. The event concluded with a commitment from stakeholders to continue collaborating on sustainable farming practices that benefit the entire Ashanti Region.
