Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, has paid a courtesy visit to the national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, to express solidarity ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup. The meeting, held at the Mendiata Hotel in Accra, served as a platform for the diplomat to encourage the 15 players and their technical staff as they prepare for the global tournament in Mexico. The visit underscored the growing diplomatic support for Ghana's disabled athletes following their recent successes on the African continent.
During the visit, Ambassador Torres-Quevedo emphasized that while athletic competition is significant, the broader mission of championing the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities (PWDs) remains paramount. Addressing the squad, he stated that "sport is important, but the rights of persons with disabilities are more important," highlighting the potential for football to serve as a powerful tool for social advocacy. He further expressed his commitment to fostering international cooperation that ensures greater access, recognition, and inclusion for athletes with disabilities.
Foster Kwarteng, President of the Ghana Amputee Football Association, expressed gratitude to the Ambassador for his consistent support of disability sports in the country. The Black Challenge is aiming for a historic victory at the global level after establishing themselves as a force in African amputee football. The team has been drawn into Group D for the upcoming World Cup, where they are scheduled to face off against Colombia, Angola, and Iraq.
