Dr. Amo Collins, the Chief Executive Officer of Obuasi Beverages Company Limited, has donated GH₵120,000 to support the emergency medical treatment of 33-year-old Edmond Benefo. This significant financial contribution is intended to cover approximately half of the funds required for Benefo to undergo specialized brain surgery in India. The donation comes at a critical time for the patient, whose family has been struggling to raise the substantial amount needed for the life-saving procedure.
The medical crisis for Edmond Benefo reportedly began with persistent eye problems, which initially appeared to be a minor ailment. However, following extensive medical consultations and diagnostic tests, it was revealed that he was suffering from a brain tumor that required immediate surgical intervention. Due to the complexity of the case, medical experts recommended the surgery be performed at a specialized facility in India, with the total cost estimated at approximately US$20,000.
The GH₵120,000 provided by Dr. Collins represents the equivalent of approximately US$10,000, effectively bridging half of the financial gap for the family. While this contribution is a major relief, the Benefo family is still appealing to the general public, corporate organisations, and philanthropic individuals to help raise the remaining balance to allow the surgery to proceed. The gesture from the Obuasi Beverages CEO underscores the vital role of corporate philanthropy in addressing urgent health needs within the community, though it also highlights the challenges families face when confronted with high-cost specialized medical treatments.
