The Amansie West Health Directorate in the Ashanti Region has raised an alarm over a significant increase in mental health conditions among the youth. Health officials attribute this trend to the prevalence of substance abuse, excessive alcohol consumption, and the proliferation of illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey. Dr. Afua Amankwaah, the Medical Superintendent of the Manso-Nkwanta Government Hospital, emphasized that the situation requires urgent intervention to protect the future of the local workforce.
According to Dr. Amankwaah, the rise in mental health issues is closely tied to the socio-economic environment of the district, where many young people are engaged in hazardous mining operations. She noted that the use of illicit substances to cope with the physical demands of galamsey has become a major contributing factor. Beyond mental health, the medical superintendent warned that illegal mining exposes residents to severe health risks, including toxic chemicals and an increased prevalence of waterborne and vector-borne diseases like malaria due to the stagnant water left in abandoned mining pits.
The health directorate is calling for intensified public education and stricter enforcement of laws against drug abuse and unregulated mining. Dr. Amankwaah urged community members, especially the youth, to avoid self-medication and the use of harmful substances as shortcuts to productivity. She stressed that early detection is critical in managing mental health conditions and other ailments, encouraging residents to utilize the services provided at the Manso-Nkwanta Government Hospital and other local clinics for regular screenings and professional consultation.
To address these growing concerns, the directorate has initiated a community healthcare outreach program aimed at promoting preventive measures and ensuring prompt medical care. The initiative focuses on educating the public about the long-term consequences of substance abuse and the environmental health hazards associated with galamsey. By fostering a culture of health consciousness, the directorate hopes to reduce the burden of mental illness and improve the overall well-being of the Amansie West District population.
