Ghanaian boxers Amadu Mohammed and Joseph "Jaguar" Commey have successfully advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 IBA Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. By reaching this stage of the competition, both athletes have guaranteed themselves at least a bronze medal, providing an early boost to the Ghanaian contingent's medal prospects at the continental tournament. Amadu Mohammed, competing in the featherweight division, secured his advancement under unusual circumstances when his opponent was unable to continue due to injury. Meanwhile, Joseph "Jaguar" Commey, fighting in the light welterweight category, had to endure a more grueling contest. Commey emerged victorious following a hard-fought bout that ended in a narrow 3-2 split decision in his favor, demonstrating the resilience of the Ghanaian side in the face of stiff competition. The 2026 edition of the championships has made history by attracting a record 171 participants, the highest number of boxers ever to compete in the event. This surge in participation highlights the growing prestige of the IBA Africa Elite championships and the increasing level of competition across the continent. For the Black Bombers, as the national boxing team is known, these early successes in Kinshasa represent a significant step toward their goal of maintaining Ghana's status as a dominant force in African boxing.
