Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohamed has claimed a silver medal at the 2026 IBA Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Competing in the featherweight division, Mohamed narrowly missed out on the gold medal following a closely contested final match on Tuesday. The result marks another significant achievement for the boxer, who has become a consistent performer for Ghana on the international stage.
The final bout saw Mohamed face off against Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in a highly anticipated rematch. In a high-intensity encounter that went the full distance, the judges delivered a narrow 3-2 split decision in favour of the Zambian. The victory allowed Mwale to avenge his previous defeat to Mohamed during the African Games held in Accra. While Mwale secured Zambia's third gold medal of the tournament, Mohamed’s technical skill and persistence throughout the three rounds were noted by observers despite the final scorecard.
This silver medal adds to Amadu Mohamed's growing international profile, building on his bronze medal success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. His podium finish in Kinshasa contributed to Ghana's overall medal tally in the continental competition, which also featured a bronze medal performance by teammate Charles Kwarteng. The tournament also highlighted the strength of the Zambian contingent, with Catherine Mwape earning a silver medal in the women’s division alongside Mwale’s gold.
While falling short of the continental title, Mohamed's performance solidifies his position as one of the premier featherweight contenders in Africa. The results from the Kinshasa championships provide a benchmark for the Ghana Boxing Federation as they evaluate the national team's progress ahead of future international assignments. Mohamed and the rest of the Ghanaian delegation are expected to return home having secured two podium finishes for the nation in a competitive field of African boxing talent.
