Alhassan Mumuni, the Member of Parliament for Salaga North, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has distributed essential relief items to 288 households in Bunjai following devastating floods. The distribution comes after heavy rainfall on September 23, 2026, caused significant destruction in the North East Gonja District community. The disaster resulted in the total collapse of approximately 70 houses and caused extensive damage to critical local infrastructure, leaving many residents displaced or in precarious living conditions.
The relief package provided to the affected families included a mix of immediate survival items and long-term reconstruction materials. Residents received substantial quantities of foodstuffs to address immediate hunger, alongside mattresses for those who lost their bedding in the deluge. To facilitate the rebuilding of destroyed homes, the MP and NADMO also supplied building materials such as bags of cement and bundles of roofing sheets. This intervention is aimed at helping the community transition from emergency shelter to more permanent housing as the recovery phase begins.
Beyond the immediate household needs, the MP highlighted the severe impact the flooding has had on the community's shared resources. During the distribution exercise, Hon. Alhassan Mumuni appealed for further government and stakeholder assistance to rehabilitate the community's dam and the local road network. Both the dam, which serves as a primary water source, and the transport routes were significantly compromised by the floodwaters, hampering movement and access to clean water for the Bunjai residents.
Residents of Bunjai expressed their profound gratitude for the timely intervention, noting the immense hardships they have faced since the disaster. While the delivery of building materials and food provides much-needed relief, the community remains concerned about the long-term restoration of their livelihoods and infrastructure. The MP's office and NADMO officials have indicated that they will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate further support as the district works to recover from the environmental crisis.
