The Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Hon. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, and the District Chief Executive for Kassena-Nankana West, Hon. Stephen Aeke Akurugo, have launched a significant intervention to improve educational infrastructure in the district. The initiative includes the immediate distribution of hundreds of desks and tables, alongside the announcement of an additional 3,800 pieces of furniture secured through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). These efforts are aimed at mitigating a severe furniture deficit that has long hampered teaching and learning in the region, providing much-needed relief to both students and educators. In the first phase of the distribution, the officials handed over 900 dual desks, 40 hexagonal tables, and 240 chairs to various schools. The procurement was primarily financed using the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF), with DCE Akurugo noting that 10% of the assembly's common fund is now specifically allocated to addressing school furniture needs. Beyond the equipment, the leaders also commissioned a newly constructed classroom block at Boania, signaling a broader commitment to expanding physical infrastructure to accommodate the growing student population. Hon. Alamzy highlighted the long-term sustainability of these efforts, revealing that GETFund has committed to supplying 3,800 additional furniture units to ensure every student in the constituency has a proper place to sit. He also noted that future projects would include a diaspora-funded initiative to construct more classrooms. Amidst these developments, the MP took the opportunity to address striking teachers, urging them to return to the classroom as negotiations with the government continue, emphasizing that the students' academic progress must remain the priority during the industrial dispute. The intervention has been warmly welcomed by local education authorities, with the District Director of Education, Madam Mary Magdalene Wompakia, acknowledging that the furniture shortage had reached a critical level that hindered classroom management. The day’s activities concluded with a social inclusion component, as the officials made donations to persons with disabilities (PWDs). This holistic approach to community development underscores the collaborative efforts of the local executive and legislature to elevate the standard of living and education within the Kassena-Nankana West District.
