The Akuse Volta River Authority International School Limited (VISL) emerged as the overall winner of this year’s Eastern Region Bookworm Reading Competition, claiming six individual awards. Held at the GNAT Teachers Hall in Accra, the event celebrated students who demonstrated exceptional reading proficiency and comprehension. The competition, organized by Bookworm Avenue Consult, brought together nine finalists across various school categories to compete for top honors in a bid to foster a culture of literacy among Ghanaian youth.
Among the standout performers were Danwilliams Seyram Hodzi, who excelled in the lower primary category, and Esaba Mensah Darkwah, who secured victory in the upper primary division. For their achievements, the students were presented with a range of valuable prizes intended to support their ongoing academic journeys. These included laptops, tablets, and educational scholarships. In addition to these academic tools, the top winners were also awarded trips to Dubai, highlighting the high level of reward associated with this regional academic contest.
During the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Bookworm Avenue Consult emphasized the organization's mission to make reading both competitive and engaging for children. By gamifying the literacy process, the group aims to encourage more students to pick up books outside of their standard curriculum. In response to the school's success, the Managing Director of Akuse VISL attributed the victory to the institution's significant investment in its library facilities and dedicated instructional time for reading. The director noted that literacy remains the foundational pillar of the school's educational philosophy.
The winners expressed profound gratitude to their teachers and parents, citing their continuous support and guidance as the driving force behind their success. As these students prepare for their upcoming international trips and utilize their new educational equipment, the competition serves as a reminder of the importance of extracurricular academic engagement. The success of Akuse VISL in this regional tournament underscores the impact of institutional support for literacy programs in improving student performance and confidence.
