The Akonta Foundation, under the leadership of Torgbui Tenuvi II, has launched a significant sports equipment support project aimed at revitalizing grassroots athletics across the Ketu South Municipality. The initiative, which officially commenced in October 2026, involves the distribution of 300 sets of jerseys and 300 footballs to 100 basic schools within the region. This strategic intervention seeks to address the chronic shortage of sports kits and equipment that has historically hindered the development of young athletes in local educational institutions.
Under the framework of the project, each participating school will receive three complete sets of jerseys and three high-quality footballs, specifically designated for their Under-13 and Under-15 teams. Torgbui Tenuvi II underscored the vital role of grassroots sports in identifying and nurturing talent at an early age, while also promoting essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and physical well-being. He highlighted that while the foundation is committed to this cause, there remains a pressing need for enhanced collaboration between the private sector and the government to improve overall sports infrastructure across the country.
The timing of this equipment drive is strategically aligned with the municipality's long-term competitive goals. It serves as a preparatory phase for the upcoming 56th Inter-District Sports Festival scheduled for 2027. The Akonta Foundation has a track record of supporting such athletic milestones, having previously contributed GH¢10,000 to assist Ketu South's participation in the 55th festival in 2026, where the municipality sought to defend its championship standing. A centralized handing-over ceremony is slated for later in October, involving local education officials and school representatives to formalize the distribution and celebrate the expansion of youth sports opportunities.
