Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced a strategic shift in the implementation of the Agenda 111 project, stating that the government will now concentrate resources on completing 35 selected district hospitals. This move is designed to ensure that these facilities are fully finished, equipped, and operational, addressing concerns that spreading funding across all projects simultaneously was delaying the delivery of healthcare services to the public.
During an interview on October 19, the Minister disclosed that approximately GH‵4.5 billion has already been invested in the nationwide hospital construction initiative. Akandoh observed that had this funding been more concentrated initially, about 20 hospitals could have been fully completed by now. The new approach aims to rectify this by channeling financial resources into projects that are nearest to completion, rather than maintaining a thin spread of capital across the entire portfolio.
To support this completion phase, the government is actively seeking partnerships with faith-based healthcare providers to assist in both the finishing and equipping of the selected hospitals. The Minister explained that the selection of the 35 prioritised sites was not arbitrary but guided by specific criteria, including the current level of construction progress and the need for equitable regional distribution to ensure all parts of the country benefit from the upgraded infrastructure.
The Agenda 111 project remains a cornerstone of the national health strategy, aimed at bridging the gap in healthcare infrastructure across Ghana’s districts. By narrowing the immediate focus to 35 facilities, the Ministry of Health expects to deliver functional hospitals more rapidly, providing essential medical services to underserved communities while continuing to manage the remaining projects in the broader pipeline.
