The Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources and Member of Parliament for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim, has underscored the critical role of educational infrastructure in driving sustainable development within the Banda District. During a recent inspection of ongoing Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects at Bandaman Senior High Technical School, the Minister emphasized that modernizing facilities is essential to equipping the youth with the scientific and vocational skills required for the modern job market. He highlighted that these investments are not merely about buildings but about developing the human capital necessary for the district’s long-term economic growth. Ibrahim highlighted a strategic need to diversify the local economy, which has historically been dominated by agriculture. With over 44,000 acres of land acquired for the Bui Hydro Dam project, the Minister noted a pressing urgency for residents to acquire technical expertise. Currently, only a few local residents are employed at the Bui Power Authority, a gap Ibrahim attributes to a lack of specialized training. By prioritizing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, the government aims to ensure that the community can directly benefit from the industrial and technical opportunities created by the dam's presence. The transformation of Bandaman Senior High Technical School is currently being supported through several major GETFund-financed projects. These upgrades include the construction of a modern science laboratory, new dormitories, a dining hall, and additional classroom blocks. These facilities are designed to address existing infrastructure constraints that have long hindered effective teaching and learning for the school’s 687 students. The headmaster of the institution expressed optimism that the completion of these facilities would not only improve learning outcomes but also allow for a significant increase in student enrollment. Beyond the physical structures, the Minister called for a collective effort from traditional leaders and local stakeholders to prioritize human capital development. He envisions Bandaman Senior High Technical School becoming a leading technical institution in the region, serving as a model for how technical and vocational education (TVET) can be leveraged for community empowerment. As the government continues its focus on STEM education, the upgrades at Bandaman are seen as a cornerstone for the economic resilience and self-reliance of the Banda District in the face of changing land use and industrialization.
