Agri-Impact Ltd, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has launched the Sustainable Aquaculture for Women Advancement (SAWA) programme to transform Ghana’s fisheries sector. This initiative is designed to create 60,000 jobs and business opportunities specifically for young women across the country. By focusing on the tilapia and catfish value chains, the programme seeks to empower a new generation of female entrepreneurs and strengthen the nation's agricultural economy.
The initiative specifically targets women aged 18 to 35, offering them roles throughout the entire aquaculture value chain, including production, processing, and marketing. To ensure the programme's success, Agri-Impact is collaborating with several key partners, such as Newage Agric Solutions and the Fisheries Commission. These organisations will provide the technical support and essential resources required to help participants establish and scale sustainable businesses, moving them toward financial independence.
A major focus of the SAWA programme is to enhance profitability for local farmers by addressing the high cost of inputs. The initiative aims to achieve a 20% reduction in fish feed expenses, which has historically been a significant barrier to growth in the industry. By lowering these operational costs, the programme intends to make aquaculture a more viable career path for young women, while simultaneously increasing domestic fish production and reducing Ghana’s reliance on imports.
