Majority Leader James Agalga has addressed the detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, who is currently being held in the Netherlands. Frimpong was taken into custody following an extradition request from the United States related to allegations of money laundering and involvement in romance scams. Agalga underscored that while the charges are serious, the MP is entitled to the presumption of innocence as guaranteed by the Constitution of Ghana.
The Majority Leader clarified that he does not currently have the full details regarding the specific charges filed against Frimpong. Despite this lack of detailed information, Agalga confirmed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission is actively providing support to the MP. He further announced plans to visit the lawmaker in the Netherlands to gain a firsthand understanding of the situation and the legal proceedings Frimpong is facing.
Agalga also addressed public calls for Frimpong’s parliamentary seat to be declared vacant, describing such demands as premature and legally unfounded at this stage. He maintained that a vacancy cannot be declared in the absence of a conviction, emphasizing that the legal process must be allowed to run its course. Frimpong is expected to remain in Dutch custody until his extradition hearing, which is scheduled for November 18, 2026.
